Database error messages are usually caused by insufficient user rights, leading to an inability to access the database. Database error messages may also be generated after a change in configuration.

A user must have a Windows account (with a password) to connect to the database file.  In most cases the Windows User will need Administrator priviledges.  This can be specified from Control Panel - User Accounts.  This strong user access control has been developed by Microsoft to prevent unauthorised access to your database or other files.

Unable to Connect to existing Database On Startup

The user may not be able to connect to an existing database file

Possible Causes

SQL Express not started. Restart the computer, or manually start SQL Express

Login to Server failed / Unable to create Login

The user must login to the database server before accessing the company database file. The login uses your Windows login details (username and password) to connect to the database server.

Possible Causes

• When the database server is first installed, a login is created using your Windows User Account. If you do not have enough permissions to do this, the operation will fail
• If a different user to the user who installed the server application tries to connect to the server, a connection failure with a "Login Failed" error message may result. To fix this, login as the user who installed the application and add the second user as a new database login. Grant the new login a "sysadmin" server role. The Windows login username name must be used. To add a new login, download SQL Server Management Studio Express (a free download from Microsoft.com for use with the SQL Server express database engine). If you use SQL Server, then use SQL Server Management Studio.

The Current Database is No Longer Displayed in the List of Databases:

Possible Causes

• Database file may have been removed using SQL Server Management Studio Express
• Database file may have been detached. The Database file must be attached using the Database - Database Setup - Attach function . Select the primary datafile and attach to the database engine. See Setup and Maintenance.

Database file Read Write failure:

Possible Causes

• You may have insufficent rights to update the database file. Select the folder where the database file is located and assign increased rights using Windows explorer (Right click the folder and select Properties - Security), or
• Assign administrator rights to your  Windows username.

Operating System Error 2

Possible Causes

• The database file is missing.  The database file may have been deleted using Windows Explorer by the User. The application will try to delete the orphan database reference for this file in SQL Express. You normally need to close and restart the application to correct this problem
